Nodfyr Portugal introduced to the participants of the FuegoRED International Congress

The FuegoRED International Congress has been organised systematically every two years. The latest edition - the 11th - was held at the University of Salamanca, in the department of the Faculty of Geography and History, from 16 to 18 October 2024. This event brought together experts on forest fires, including scientists, students, managers and forestry service providers, addressing how they are impacted by fires.

FuegoRED is made up of almost 600 members, researchers from more than 35 universities and research centres across Spain, who bring the experience of decades of scientific and technical work in areas affected by forest fires, as well as leading foreign researchers from countries such as Colombia, the United States, Portugal, Australia, Lithuania, the United Kingdom, France and others.

The topics discussed at this 11th edition of the congress were not limited to the issue of wildfires and soil; fire was also widely debated and explored as a utilitarian management tool. There were several studies on prescribed, socio-economic dynamics, nature-based solutions using fire, environmental/forestry education, risk prevention and fire modelling, among others.

Silvana Pais, researcher, PhD student, founding member and board member of Nodfyr Portugal, had her work accepted for an oral communication, and brought to the congress a presentation on the topics she has been exploring in recent years, with the theme “Integrating Prescribed Fire and Land Management Strategies for Enhanced Landscape Resilience in Fire-Prone Regions”.

Due to the importance given to the subject of prescribed fire during the congress in Salamanca, our associate took the opportunity to present the NODFYR Portugal Association to the community present. The work, widely validated by the audience, emphasised the importance of fire as a tool for managing the landscape and ecosystems. Thus, presenting an NGO that aims to promote and protect the role of fire proved to be not only appropriate, but essential!
