The first activity: Trainers/Mentors Course

Nodfyr

Updated: 3 days ago

After a lot of work in the last quarter of 2024, the year 2025 began in earnest for Nodfyr. 22 January was particularly special for the association because it managed to bring together some of Nodfyr's members for the first time. We had 20 members out of the 63 registered up to the day of the training, and Ana Tortosa, a leader of the association's Disciplinary Board, joined the group on the last two days of the activity. The first meeting and the start of the association's activities could not have taken place without the support and trust of the Municipality of Paredes de Coura, which was also responsible for launching the challenge to its founding members, which is why it was chosen as the location for this activity.

The reason for this first meeting matched the first training activity, exclusively dedicated to training members and creating a network and structure of mentors, who will then be able to support other members in the regions where they work. This training activity also served to certify the members in order to fulfil the requirements to take out the Civil Responsibility Insurance that Nodfyr makes available to mentoring members.

With a special focus on the traditional use of fire as a tool for sustainable land management and the functioning of prescribed burning associations, the initiative brought together around 20 participants from various regions of Portugal and Spain (Galicia, the Valencian Community and the Community of Castilla La Mancha). The course was taught by Emanuel Oliveira, from the Municipality of Paredes de Coura (Rural Laboratory) and José Luis Duce and Andrea Bustos, specialists in the use of prescribed fire from the US organisations The Nature Conservancy and The Watershed Research and Training Center.

The main highlights of the training activity were the hands-on exercises in communication, leadership and conflict management, which enabled participants to learn valuable lessons with the fundamental application of critical judgement. On the final day, it was also possible to set up working groups to debate and develop proposals and blueprints for the areas of training, burning plans and the association's annual activity plan.
