Wildfire management: innovative TEK solutions instead of a Tech approach

It was with the premise shared in the title of this text that the founding member of NodfyrPortugal, Professor Paulo Fernandes from UTAD, the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, took advantage of the last slides of his presentation ‘Fostering resilience to wildfire through Traditional Ecological Knowledge’, to introduce Nodfyr Portugal, Prescribed Fire Association of Europe, to the invited audience at the FIRE-RES 1st Innovation Day Series, which took place in Penafiel on 29 and 30 October.

The seminar was organised by CoLAB ForestWISE in collaboration with the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA) and the Associação Florestal do Vale de Sousa (AFVS) and was attended by approximately 70 participants, including entrepreneurs, researchers, NGOs, policy-makers and other interested parties from all over Europe and the United States.

The presentation highlighted the knowledge of rural communities, acquired over several generations, in the management of their habitats; the prejudice that exists around the potential of traditional knowledge about fire and the opportunity that exists in these practices to complement technical fire management interventions in the territories.

Traditional Ecological Knowledge is still present in several mountain territories, from Portugal to Greece, and can be decisive in supporting ecosystem services such as increasing biodiversity, promoting grazing habitats for domestic and wild animals, and enhancing flowering to support pollinators.
